“Jewelry enables self-expression”
Gender-fluid jewelry is increasingly taking center stage with brands blurring lines between menswear and womenswear accessories. Retailers and Brands have started to fill this gap and cater to no-gender norms, classifying gender-fluid jewellery as neither feminine nor masculine.
Over the past few years, gender norms have been challenged by the so-called gender-fluid fashion movement. It has been rearranging the gender spectrum and expanding the idea of gender.
Historically speaking, gender-fluid fashion has existed for thousands of years. High heels were originally designed for men, while makeup was worn by both men and women as far back as 2000 BC, in ancient Egypt and Greece. Moreover, the Maharajas commissioned Cartier to create some of the most iconic Art Deco jewelry at the beginning of the last Century. Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent are renowned for being the designers who put women in trousers. David Bowie and Grace Jones were just a few of the trendsetting artists and musicians who have been pushing gender norms for decades.
Both gender-fluid and unisex Style are reshaping Self-Expression rules. More brands are taking part in the Gender-fluid Movement, which is a great step towards positive change.
This should not be just a marketing strategy but should be an authentic belief. There is a whole new generation who have a fresh view of fashion and gender, including Gen Z who refuse to be put in a box, and are way more open-minded when it comes to gender and sexuality. Gender-Fluidity embraces the Social shifting of expressing oneself with no judgment, a personal way of expressing aesthetics without being labeled.
Jewelry collections have changed their architecture shifting from matching sets to individual items to be chosen, possibly to be layered by the user. Products have become more versatile with minimalistic yet bold designs.
Less is more, but not too small or at least stackable as Maximalism is definitely a branch of self-expression.
